Event Horizon is what happens when you collide Clive Barker sensibilities with a Lovecraftian notion of otherworldly dread and have it directed by Mr. Resident Evil, Paul W.S. Anderson (also Mr. Milla Jovovich, …fucker). I loved it. Sam Neill never disappoints and Laurence Fishburne was incredible as always. The entire concept of space travel accidentally sending a ship to hell was singing my song. The battling between tough-as-nails Captain Miller and sneaky, evil Doctor Weir was a thrill to watch and, with this set design, is quite beautiful. The individual hauntings were fun and reminded me of Flatliners with a ton of Alien-esque atmosphere. The ending is difficult to dissect in that I enjoyed the escalating crazy that is Weir but thought there could’ve been more of a punch than just a standardized finale.
Loved the “eyes” scene and all the ghosts aboard the ship torturing the crew. Also really appreciated the ‘evil manifesting itself’ look Doctor Weir takes on. Again, wasn’t a huge fan of the ending regarding the ship’s core/sphere (or whatever) but enjoyed the hell outta the film.
