This movie had the blackest phone and the most ‘Ethan’-est Hawke. When kids go missing another kid goes missing only he has the power of previous victims to help him by communicating with those that vanished via black, ghost phone in a basement. It’s heartbreaking and cruel but a fun ride nonetheless. Black object symbolism and native spirit forces abound in this escape thriller from the dark mind of Joe Hill.
Loved the 80s suburban vibe and the imagery the killer presents. Hated hearing how the dead kids suffer in life then the afterlife but enjoyed the retribution and the ending. As a father, it’s hard to watch horror shit about kids but this was worth the weight in that it delves into something you’re clawing at for an escape and rooting for at the same time. The masks were great, the atmosphere was *chef’s-kiss emojis* and I loved the black balloon calling card imagery.
