Big ass spider terrorizes an apartment building whilst avoiding flies and going for people and their pets. I’m in. I love giant spider movies (Arachnophobia, Eight-Legged Freaks, The Notebook, etc.) and this one was great. When a young knucklehead takes a baby alien spider and nurtures it, she unwittingly lets it loose on a tiny building with a struggling family. There’s a lot of character building which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I could’ve done with even more spider action. Involving a baby was unfair and I kept expecting the worst. The super-soaker gear-up was fun and the mangled corpses in the ducts were a delight. I thoroughly enjoyed this little monster.
Loved the effects (both cgi and practical) and the contained story. The idea that the “strange black dog” runs from the grandma because of mothballs was a good time. Hated the slow pacing with the family story. Again, I get it but I’m here for the creepy crawlies, not divorce drama and occupational stresses although, Frank, the exterminator, was awesome. I do, however, take issues with inaccurate depictions of the modern nail gun and their workings. If you like this, check out Sébastien Vanicek’s ‘Infested’ (ooh-wee it’ll getcha).
