Firestarter (1984)
8/10
Not only was this my first Stephen Kong book, it’s that glorious ‘80s cocktail of psychic chaos, government goons, and one very small girl who can light things on fire. Drew Barrymore delivers a performance so rad, it’s a wonder the film reel didn’t spontaneously combust. It’s got enough slow-motion explosions to make Michael Bay blush.
Watching “Firestarter” feels like sipping a sangria that’s been spiked with jet fuel—sweet at first, then suddenly you’re ducking for cover as everything bursts into flames and you have to pay your landlord back for the damage to the porch. It’s equal parts heartwarming and hazardous, and by the end, you’re rooting for Drew to torch everything in sight. Moral of the story? Never always quit downing sangria. Why? …because.
